Material relating to the Emanuel Leutze painting, Washington rallying the troops at Monmouth, 1853-1965.

Collection consists of historical materials concerning the painting and materials relating to the exhibition of the painting at the University of California, Berkeley. Historical materials include transcripts of letter by David Leavitt to Leutze and agreement between them concerning Leavitt's purchase of the painting, 1854; letter of Julia Leutze to Edward Leavitt, 1882; undated translation of article on Leutze's Battle at Monmouth by A. Starr; letters by Fischer Howe about the painting, 1926-27. Materials re the 1965 exhibition include brochure with commentary by Hershel Chipp, and other university materials about the history of the painting. A scrapbook of clippings and other materials re the exhibition, posters, and newspaper article are oversize and housed in Box 2.

Painter Emanuel Leutze was born in Germany and emigrated to America in his youth. He became well-known regionally for his painting, especially portraits, and returned to Germany to paint and study from 1841 through 1859.
